Best processor for embedded network client?

I need full ethernet and TCP/IP connectivity for an embedded project I am working on and wondering about processor selction. PIC look very straightforward in use but ARM looks considerably more powerful at the cost of being much more complex. What is the simplest realistic option for basic network connectivity?
